Important for me is what Toru Haga wrote in publications of the results of Mainichi Haiku Contests. We should think about it…

“Sighs from the ennui within peaceful daily life or the discovery of small incidents of happiness – such subjects are probably fine when composing haiku within the Japanese archipelago. But when taking the opportunity to create haiku in English or French, poets should break through such petite bourgeoisie form and focus on the enigmatic insecurity of humans. This year I stumbled upon several haiku like this.” (2007)
“It appears that haiku from overseas, in both the United States and Europe, are increasingly taking on a Japanese tone. Subdued haiku that are conscious of the beauties of nature as the key poetic theme, delighting in daily trifles, have further increased. I hope that haiku authors will set themselves at a distance from Japan, away from association and even away from haiku itself, and in the place where they find themselves, engage in a short-poem form of literature exhibiting independence and self-respect.” (2008)
“Haiku have spread from East to West, and there is no need for international haiku to dwell on the four seasons of the Japanese archipelago or to imitate the 5-7-5 pattern of Japanese haiku. Breaking away from the Japanese-style key poetic theme of the beauty of nature is precisely what is required in the International Section. This year that approach worked its way through the minds and memories of the composers, and resulted in some excellent poems.” (2009)

Zwielicht
Ich gehe mit meiner Hündin die Abendrunde. Ein Feldweg kreuzt unseren Wiesenpfad. Eine junge Frau radelt vorüber. Ich kenne sie. In der Nähe hat sie ihren Garten. Ein Gruß, ein Winken, dann hänge ich wieder meinen Gedanken nach.
Irgendwann stoße ich wieder auf den Feldweg. Die junge Frau radelt vorüber, in dieselbe Richtung. War sie nicht erst vor kurzem auf dem Weg zu ihrem Garten? Wie viel Zeit verging zwischen diesen Begegnungen? Verging überhaupt Zeit? Was ging mir zwischenzeitlich durch den Sinn, wenn es denn zwei Ereignisse waren? Ich weiß es nicht. Ich kann auch nicht mehr sagen, wie lange ich grübelnd in der Wiese stand.
